The Batangworo Tree – a sacred place by the sea 🌳

Sacred Batangworo Tree in Abéné, Senegal – six intertwined kapok trees, spiritual site for rituals and women's offerings during retreat

In the coastal village of Abéné, in the deep south of Senegal, stands a tree that is more than just nature. The Batangworo Tree is a place of strength, mystery, and connection. Just a short walk from the ocean, six massive kapok trees rise from one intertwined root system. Together, they form a living monument to both nature and spirituality.
During the 10-day retreat with Sunrise Senegal, we visit this remarkable place.

Six trees, one soul

In the Mandinka language, “Banta Woro” means “six fromagers” (fromager being the French word for kapok tree). What makes this tree so unique is that it’s not a single tree, but six that have grown together over time. Their roots are now so intertwined that they have become one living being — a powerful symbol of unity.

A sacred place of feminine energy

The tree is seen as a sacred site. According to local tradition, a spirit or genie lives within it, and women from the village come to offer prayers, gratitude, or personal requests. They bring small offerings — milk, kola nuts, bread, or cookies.
What’s special is that this space is reserved for women. Men may only enter if invited by a woman.
This ritual comes from a blend of local traditions and Islamic influences that have coexisted for centuries. It reflects the unique spiritual harmony of Casamance.

A living monument of Casamance

The Batangworo Tree is not only sacred, but visually striking. Its root structure is so vast and sculptural that people often climb onto it or sit within it. Children play there, while travelers listen quietly to the stories shared by local guides.
It’s a place where many feel something in the air — whether or not they believe in spiritual traditions.

Stories and encounter

On one of the first days of the retreat, Saikou takes us to this magical place and shares its ancient stories. Some guests are deeply moved, others feel curious or energized.
Sit quietly, climb up, listen, or simply feel. Let the tree and its surroundings speak to you.

More than nature

The Batangworo Tree is a living example of how nature, community, and spirituality are deeply connected.
A place to pause.
To breathe.
To slow down.
And perhaps — to leave something behind, or take something with you that you never expected.

Feeling called? Come with us to this sacred place.
During our 10-day retreat this October, I will take you — together with Saikou — deep into the heart of Casamance and to the soul of the Batangworo Tree.
